MIAMI BEACH, Fla., Sept. 13 (UPI) -- A judge in Miami-Dade County, Fla., has acquitted the hip-hop singer Kelis on charges of resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.
Judge Antonio Arzola officially cleared the "Milkshake" singer of the charges after finding the prosecution in the case could not substantiate the criminal allegations against Kelis, whose full name is Kelis Rogers-Jones, E! Online said Friday.
The charges stemmed from a 2007 arrest of the popular singer in Miami Beach, Fla., in which Rogers-Jones allegedly yelled racial epithets at two undercover police officers.
After allegedly interfering with the female officers' prostitution operation, Rogers-Jones was arrested and charged. Her husband, the rapper Nas, was not arrested despite being with her at the time.
Rogers-Jones' attorney, Ira Loewy, said the judge's ruling proved that the hip-hop artist was merely utilizing her constitutional rights during the incident.
"The only basis for granting her a judgment acquittal is if there's no evidence whatsoever a jury could find her guilty," Loewy told E! Online. "In this case ... you can't arrest someone for questioning police authority or protesting an action."
"She was engaged in a constitutionally protected right to protest this police action."
