'Good Morning' star survives auto accident

NEW YORK, Aug. 30 (UPI) -- Sam Champion, who announces the weather for "Good Morning America," says he somehow survived a potentially deadly highway accident in Long Island, N.Y.

The TV star said he and his driver were traveling on the Long Island Expressway Friday when their vehicle crashed into a tractor-trailer that had jackknifed, the New York Daily News reported Saturday.

"I was looking down and Brian, the driver, said, 'Look out.' He hit the brakes really hard. You could see the front of the truck coming at the car," the popular weatherman said.

"I remember thinking, 'This is bad. This is bad. This is really, really bad!"

While Champion and his driver suffered minor scrapes, neither needed medical treatment.

The Daily News said Champion was simply happy to have survived the accident, which involved other vehicles and temporarily closed the expressway route.

"It was scary, but an amazing relief that we were both OK," the "Good Morning" personality said.
