Edinburgh Fringe director quits after year

EDINBURGH, Scotland, Aug. 28 (UPI) -- Jon Morgan has announced his resignation as director of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe arts event in Scotland after only a year in the position.

The Scotsman quoted Morgan as saying he planned to go back to "producing and presenting exciting performance to audiences."

Morgan's departure reportedly comes after the announcement that the festival experienced a 10 percent plunge in box office receipts this year.

During his tenure as director, Morgan also supervised the installation of a new computerized ticketing system that had glitches which frustrated many festival goers, the newspaper said.

"I have been considering this for some time, but felt it was important not to announce my departure before the festival so as to not impact on this year's festival," Morgan told The Scotsman. "Following discussion with the board I have now decided to step down with immediate effect, but I would like to stress that I will contribute fully to the independent review of the box office which was announced earlier this month."
