LOS ANGELES, Aug. 21 (UPI) -- U.S. singer-songwriter Sheryl Crow says she's launching a voter registration drive by giving away free downloads of her new song "Gasoline."

Crow, whose rock albums have sold more than 30 million copies worldwide, has teamed with the youth voter outreach effort Rock the Vote to give away the song to current members of the group's mailing list, A&M Records said in a statement released Thursday.

Crow is also distributing the free track to those who log on to her Web page at the Rockthevote.com, and is offering free downloads of her new album, "Detours," to the first 50,000 individuals who get three friends to register to vote.

"I have been involved with Rock the Vote since its inception and am proud of the work they have done," the singer said in statement. "There are such critical issues facing our country, from high gas prices to climate change that we need to do more then just register to vote, we need to get our friends registered too."
