LONDON, Aug. 16 (UPI) -- U.S. pop star Madonna, who turned 50 Saturday, has sold more albums than any other female solo artist in history, Guinness World Records show.
The Celebrity News Service said since her success with such 1980s hits as "Like a Virgin" and "Like a Prayer," Madonna has enjoyed unequaled success among female artists worldwide.
Guinness records show that to date, the 50-year-old has sold nearly 120 million albums and 40 million singles worldwide.
As the pop star, whose real name is Madonna Louise Ciccone Ritchie, has earned such unprecedented success, she has also altered her image drastically.
The news service said while the "True Blue" star once was known for her tight corsets and racy actions, she now is known as an HIV activist and children's book author.
A representative for the singer would only confirm Madonna is in Britain for her birthday, but would not offer details of the singer's celebratory plans.
