NEW YORK, Aug. 7 (UPI) -- Sci Fi Channel Thursday announced plans to air a new "Battlestar Galactica" special event in 2009, following the conclusion of the series of the same name.

Directed by series star Edward James Olmos and written by "Battlestar Galactica's" Jane Espenson, the two-hour program is scheduled to begin shooting in Vancouver at the end of this summer.

The cast includes Michael Trucco, Aaron Douglas and Dean Stockwell, with more actors to be announced in the coming weeks, the network said.

The final 10 episodes of "Battlestar Galactica" are to begin airing on Sci Fi Channel in 2009.
