MEMPHIS, Aug. 7 (UPI) -- A spokeswoman for the Regional Medical Center at Memphis says recently injured, Oscar-winning actor Morgan Freeman has been released.

Freeman, whose latest movie "The Dark Knight" has been the No. 1 movie at the U.S. box office for three weeks, underwent surgery for injuries he sustained in a Mississippi car crash Sunday night.

The 71-year-old actor sustained a broken arm and elbow and injured his shoulder in the accident.

Kathy Stringer, the hospital's spokeswoman, told People.com Thursday that Freeman had been released from the hospital.

Freeman's lawyer Bill Luckett told the entertainment news Web site: "The doctors have said it will be six months to a year before he plays golf again. He hates that."
