NEW YORK, July 23 (UPI) -- A Broadway musical based on the Hollywood film classic "Robin and the 7 Hoods" reportedly is in the works.

Variety.com said producers Bruce Charet, Barry Brown and others are working on the adaptation of the 1964 movie about 1920s gangsters, which starred Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr.

Casey Nicholaw is to direct and choreograph the musical, while Peter Ackerman is writing a new book for the show. The retooled "Robin" is tentatively scheduled to open in the spring of 2010, the entertainment industry trade paper said.

The musical is expected to be updated to the late 1950s and early 1960s and will include about 15 songs written by Sammy Cahn and James Van Heusen.

"It's a fascinating little moment in history when the old culture met the sexual revolution," Charet told Variety.com of the new setting for "Robin." "It is the Rat Pack and James Bond and Playboy -- this very attractive, sexy period when all people were interested in doing was getting laid and drinking martinis."
