LONDON, July 21 (UPI) -- A judge in London Monday sentenced Blake Fielder-Civil, the husband of troubled British soul singer Amy Winehouse, to 27 months in prison for assault.

Judge David Radford told Fielder-Civil he had behaved in a "gratuitous, cowardly and disgraceful" way, the Daily Mail reported.

While Winehouse frequently talks about her "Blake incarcerated" during concerts, the British newspaper reported she was not present when Fielder-Civil was sentenced on charges he committed grievous bodily harm and perverted the course of justice.

Fielder-Civil had previously admitted he assaulted pub manager James King in a 2006 bar brawl, then tried to pay King $400,000 not to testify against him.

Fielder-Civil has served about nine months in jail and reportedly could be released in less than five months if he behaves himself.

The Mail said Fielder-Civil's attorney, Jeremy Dein, told Snaresbrook Crown Court the couple "are very much committed to each other and their ambition is to divorce themselves from hard drugs and not separate themselves from each other."

"He knows if he fails, an appointment with calamity awaits, not just for himself but for his wife," Dein said.
