NEW YORK, July 20 (UPI) -- Singer Paul McCartney said during a Shea Stadium performance that he was pleased to be at the New York stadium before it was demolished.
McCartney, who joined fellow singer Billy Joel on stage Friday night, said it was enjoyable to back in the stadium where The Beatles performed more than four decades earlier, The New York Times (NYSE:NYT) reported Saturday.
"It's so cool to be back here on the last night," the former Beattle said. "Been here a long time ago -- we had a blast that night, and we're having another one tonight."
Despite the appearance of McCartney and other celebrities, fans at the sold-out Shea Stadium event say Joel was the main attraction.
"I don't know how much longer he's going to be doing concerts, so I want to get every one I can get in," said administrative assistant Ronnie Glowacki, who was among 55,000 attendees. "For me it's all Billy."
The Times said the concert had been advertised as the last concert ever at Shea Stadium, which will be demolished in favor of a new baseball stadium.
