'John Adams' earns 23 Emmy nominations

LOS ANGELES, July 17 (UPI) -- "John Adams," the HBO miniseries about the second President of the United States, garnered 23 Emmy Award nominations Thursday.

Among the categories it was nominated in were outstanding miniseries, and outstanding lead actor and actress in a miniseries for Paul Giamatti and Laura Linney, who played John and Abigail Adams.

Competing in the race for outstanding actor in a supporting role in a miniseries are "Adams" co-stars David Morse, who played George Washington, Stephen Dillane who portrayed Thomas Jefferson and Tom Wilkinson who channeled Benjamin Franklin.

Also nominated for the miniseries Emmy are A&E's "The Andromeda Strain," PBS' "Cranford" and Sci Fi Channel's "Tin Man."

The NBC sit-com "30 Rock" earned 17 nods Thursday, while the AMC drama "Mad Men" followed close behind with 16, the ABC series "Pushing Daisies" earned 12 and the HBO movie "Recount" grabbed 11 nominations.
