NEW YORK, July 15 (UPI) -- The producers of the new Broadway musical, "Spider-Man," say they are holding an open casting call for an actor to play Peter Parker.

Parker is the comic book character who changes into the superhero Spider-Man to battle evil.

The producers said they are also seeking an actress to play Parker's love interest, Mary Jane, in the show, which is being directed by Julie Taymor.

The musical will feature music and lyrics by Bono and The Edge of U2.

The creative team behind the show is looking for a Peter Parker aged 16-20s, with a great rock voice, who can be "nerdy" with "understated sex appeal" and who has a good sense of humor. The want a Mary Jane actress aged 16-20s, a "beautiful girl next door" type with strong pop/rock singing voice; and a principal woman who is female, aged 25-35 with "amazing rock vocals," who is something like "Sinead O'Connor with a Middle Eastern /Bulgarian/Greek/ twist."

The open call is scheduled for July 28 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at The Knitting Factory in Manhattan.

Those wishing to audition should prepare 16 bars of a pop/rock song that shows his or her range, and bring sheet music, as well as a photo and resume if they have one, the producers said.
