'Sgt. Pepper' drum sells for $1million

LONDON, July 11 (UPI) -- A drum pictured on the cover of an iconic Beatles album has been sold at an auction in London to a private collector for $1 million.

The hand-painted bass drum, which appeared on the cover of the 1967 LP, "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band," went for four times the estimated amount at a Christie's sale of rock memorabilia Thursday, the Daily Express reported.

A pair of glasses worn by John Lennon sold for about $80,000 and his handwritten lyrics for the song "Give Peace a Chance" went for more than $840,000, the newspaper said.

"Sgt. Pepper" was the British rock 'n' roll band's eighth studio album. It included the songs "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band," "With a Little Help from My Friends," "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds," "When I'm Sixty-Four," "Good Morning Good Morning" and "A Day in the Life."
