NEW YORK, July 8 (UPI) -- A Broadway musical based on the British film "Kinky Boots" is in the works, the show's producers said.

The 2006 movie featured Chiwetel Ejiofor in a Golden Globe-nominated performance as a drag queen who helps a traditional English shoe factory reinvent itself by creating a line of sexy footwear for men who dress as women.

The Hollywood Reporter said veteran producers Daryl Roth and Hal Luftig have bought the rights to Julian Jarrold's film and are planning to make a stage musical out of it.

Although the movie isn't a musical, it does feature several cabaret numbers.

"The story is about relationships and I want to find the heart at the center of it," Roth told the entertainment industry trade paper.
