Gospel singer 'holding on' after crash

NEW YORK, July 8 (UPI) -- The Rev. Timothy Wright, a popular New York gospel singer, is conscious and "holding on" after a horrific car crash, his son David said.

David Wright told Newsday his father, who is pastor of Grace Tabernacle Christian Center Church of God in Christ in Brooklyn, N.Y., knows his 14-year-old grandson was killed in the accident but hasn't been told his wife and co-pastor, Betty Wright, died as well.

The Wrights were returning from a religious convention in Detroit last Friday when their car was hit head-on by a vehicle going the wrong way on Interstate 80 in Pennsylvania, police said.

Timothy Wright, who suffered numerous injuries, including a broken jaw, in the crash, was listed in critical condition Monday, Newsday said.

Although he has been indicating he wants to see his wife, his family agreed to keep the news of her death from him until he is physically stronger.

"He's holding on," David Wright told the newspaper. "He's conscious. He can't talk but he can nod his head."
