Hathaway's dog caught in middle of split

NEW YORK, June 27 (UPI) -- The dog U.S. actress Anne Hathaway shares with her ex-boyfriend Rafaello Follieri is being cared for by Follieri's ill mother while Follieri is in jail.

Follieri has been ordered to remain behind bars until he raises $21 million bail. The Italian businessman was arrested and charged this week with wire fraud, conspiracy and money laundering in connection with his business dealings.

Hathaway, who ended her four-year relationship with Follieri earlier this month, is traveling the world promoting her new movie "Get Smart."

Meanwhile, Esmeralda, the 2-year-old chocolate Labrador Retreiver the former couple shares, is being looked after by Follieri's mother, Anna, who came to New York from Italy to undergo cancer treatment and is staying in her son's Trump Tower penthouse, the New York Post reported.

"Could Anne Hathaway please come get her dog?" asked one of Follieri's friends.

Given his current situation, Follieri "can't afford a dog walker, and his mom has cancer," the insider told the Post. "I feel bad for the dog. She's a beautiful, sweet dog who probably greeted the FBI agents with her tail wagging."
