NEW YORK, June 24 (UPI) -- The former boyfriend of Hollywood actress Anne Hathaway reportedly has been arrested on federal wire fraud, conspiracy and money laundering charges.

Hathaway, who can now be seen in the hit comedy film "Get Smart," reportedly recently broke up with Italian businessman Raffaello Follieri. The couple are said to have been together for about four years.

TMZ.com said Follieri was arrested and expected to appear in the U.S. court in Manhattan Tuesday to answer federal charges he lied to investors and claimed he had been appointed the chief financial officer of the Vatican.

The entertainment news Web site said the federal complaint refers to Hathaway only as Follieri's unnamed girlfriend and claims she benefited from some of Follier's allegedly ill-gotten financial gains.

Investigators said that because Follieri lied about his connections to the Vatican, he was able to buy properties owned by the Catholic church in the United States for lower prices.

Hathaway has also starred in the two "Princess Diaries" films, as well as "Brokeback Mountain" and "The Devil Wears Prada."
