Reed earned her first Tony for her work in the Broadway drama, "August: Osage County," while Anna D. Shapiro earned the prize for best direction of a play for helming it.
Jim Norton won the award for featured actor in a play for his performance in "The Seafarer."
Laura Benanti won the award for best featured actress is a musical for her role in "Gypsy."
"I have never moved so quickly in all my life. I almost knocked the camera guy over," a breathless Benanti told the star-studded crowd as she took the stage to accept her award.
Moments later, Benanti's "Gypsy" co-star, Boyd Gaines, won the Tony for featured actor in a musical.
Bartlett Sher also picked up the prize for best director of a musical for helming the revival of "South Pacific," while "Boeing-Boeing" won the award for best revival of a play.
TV personality, actress and comedienne Whoopi Goldberg served as host of the event at Manhattan's Radio City Music Hall, which began with a performance of "Circle of Life" by the cast of "The Lion King."
