Actor, filmmaker Mel Ferrer dead at 90

SANTA BARBARA, Calif., June 4 (UPI) -- Hollywood actor and filmmaker Mel Ferrer has died at his ranch near Santa Barbara, Calif., said family spokesman Mike Mena.

Ferrer was 90 when he died Monday.

"It's a sad occasion, but he did live a long and productive life," Mena told The Hollywood Reporter Tuesday.

Ferrer, who was once married to late screen icon Audrey Hepburn, appeared in more than 100 films and made-for-television movies, including the cinema classics "Lili," "War and Peace" and "The Sun Also Rises."

He also acted in "The World, the Flesh and the Devil," "Sex and the Single Girl," "Paris Does Strange Things" and "The Longest Day," as well as directed nine films, produced nine others and founded the La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego, Calif., the entertainment industry trade paper said.
