CHICAGO, May 28 (UPI) -- The judge presiding over R. Kelly's child pornography trial in Chicago halted testimony Wednesday after Kelly's lawyers said a new witness had come forward.
The R&B singer is charged with videotaping himself having sex with an underage girl some time between 1998 and 2000. Kelly's attorneys maintain the female on the tape isn't who prosecutors say she is and the man having sex with her isn't Kelly.
The Chicago Sun-Times said the newly discovered defense witness, who was not previously on the defense witnesses list, could undermine the testimony of a female prosecution witness who had been expected to testify Wednesday that she had a threesome with Kelly and an underage girl.
The woman would identify the girl on the tape, say the girl was underage and identify Kelly as the man on the tape, sources told the Sun-Times.
However, Judge Vincent Gaughan adjourned the proceedings for the day, telling the courtroom, excluding the jury, that defense attorney Sam Adam Sr. told him that morning of a new witness.
"I have no idea what's going on. But it might be impeachment of this witness," Gaughan said, referring to the prosecution witness.
Gaughan said he wanted to give prosecutors time to take the defense witness's deposition before the proceedings resumed.
