Memorial service held for Chapman's child

NASHVILLE, May 26 (UPI) -- About 1,500 people attended the weekend memorial service for Christian singer Steven Curtis Chapman's 5-year-old daughter, Maria Sue, in Nashville.

The child died last week when her 17-year-old brother accidentally hit her while driving a Toyota Land Cruiser in the driveway of the family's Franklin, Tenn. home, police said. No charges were expected to be brought against the brother, who has not been identified to the media.

"He understandably is just devastated," Chapman's pastor Scotty Smith told CBN News about the teen involved in the fatal accident. "Their beautiful home has a couple of bends in the road. It just was totally an accident."

Usmagazine.com said about 1,500 mourners attended the two-hour memorial service for Maria Sue Saturday at Christ Presbyterian Church in Nashville.

During the memorial, Maria Sue, who was one of three girls Chapman and his wife adopted from China, was remembered for her love of water and distaste for clothing.

She "loved, loved, loved to be naked," Usmagazine.com quoted her mother Mary Beth Chapman as saying.

A viewing for the little girl was held Friday night.
