Study: Rock music triggers bar brawls

GLASGOW, Scotland, May 25 (UPI) -- The Rolling Stones can trigger British bar brawls, while the tunes of Robbie Williams can calm drunken crowds, Scottish researchers say.

Researchers at Glasgow University in Scotland claim they've documented varying types of crowd behavior in Britain's bars categorized by the kind of music playing on the jukeboxes and sound systems, and have found that guitar-based rock music from the likes of the Stones and AC/DC and bass-heavy rap music were more associated with violent behavior, The Sunday Times of London reported.

Conversely, they found, the anthemic music of Williams had the most consistent calming effect on bars full of drinking patrons.

The study was funded by Britain's National Health Service and claims to provide the first documented proof of a connection between music and pub violence, the newspaper said.

The Glasgow researchers also claim to have found a connection between sexually suggestive songs and violent behavior, saying songs such as "(I've Had) The Time of My Life" encourage female bar patrons to dance, which in turn triggered aggressive behavior among competing men, the Times reported.
