Screenwriter Roman dead at age 86

LOS ANGELES, May 24 (UPI) -- Lawrence Roman, a noted writer for Broadway, movies and U.S. television, has died in Los Angeles at the age of 86, his family says.

Family members said Roman, who wrote the Broadway and big-screen production of "Under the Yum-Yum Tree," died of a stroke complicated by kidney failure, the Los Angeles Times reported Saturday.

Over five decades, Roman wrote more than 20 teleplays and screenplays such as "The Ernest Green Story" and the 1974 film "McQ."

"Yum-Yum" was the most noted effort by Roman, who died last Sunday, due to its ground-breaking focus on an unmarried couple living together during the 1960s.

"For the time, the play was very progressive since it showed an unmarried man and woman living together," his daughter Catherine told the Times. "It was very important to him to stay on top of what was current, socially and politically. That's what gave his career longevity as he aged."

The newspaper said in addition to Catherine, Roman is survived by his wife Evelyn, his son Steve and a granddaughter.
