LOS ANGELES, May 22 (UPI) -- Midnight showings of "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" Wednesday reportedly earned $4.5 million at the U.S. box office.

Variety.com said the fourth film in the Indiana Jones franchise racked up another $2.2 million in France, Belgium and Switzerland, where the eagerly awaited adventure flick opened earlier Wednesday, the traditional day of release for those markets.

Last year's "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" grossed $139.7 million for the four-day Memorial Day holiday weekend, making it the record-holder for the largest domestic opening on that weekend, the trade paper said.
