NEW YORK, May 8 (UPI) -- U.S. actress Cynthia Nixon said she tries to be open with the media about what's going on in her life but only when she is ready to do so.

"When I first started dating my girlfriend and people got wind of it and they asked me, I said, 'Yes, that's true.' But there was such a scary amount of attention around it and a lot of it was kind of lascivious and distasteful, so I was like: 'Yeah, that's it. Not going to talk about it any more. Thanks so much,'" Nixon recalled, while talking to reporters in New York about her new film "Sex and the City."

"Years have passed and I have no desire not to talk about it ... and the same thing with my (breast) cancer, I would say. Right when it happened I didn't want to go to the rooftop and be like, 'I'll be having radiation from Nov. 4 until ...' You know?" she said. "But once I had gotten through it ... Once I had gotten some distance from it, I have no idea to keep it secret."

Nixon is a spokeswoman for the advocacy group Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
