CHICAGO, May 6 (UPI) -- The Illinois Supreme Court has said it won't help the media get access to sealed documents in the R. Kelly child pornography case.
Numerous media outlets last week filed an emergency petition in an attempt to force Cook County Judge Vincent Gaughan to release transcripts of four sealed proceedings held in April, the Chicago Tribune said Tuesday.
The papers filed on behalf of the media outlets also requested the court make available several sealed documents, as well as lift the gag order on parties involved in the long-delayed trial.
The state Supreme Court didn't offer an explanation for its denial of the petition, the newspaper said.
Jury selection in the case is to begin Friday.
Kelly, whose real name is Robert Kelly, is being tried for allegedly having sex with a girl as young as 13 and taping the act somewhere between early 1998 and late 2000.
The recording artist has pleaded innocent to the charges.
Pete Doherty released from jail
LONDON, May 6 (UPI) -- British rock star Pete Doherty was released from prison Tuesday after serving 29 days of a 14-week sentence for probation violations.
The 29-year-old Babyshambles front man, who has been battling an addiction to drugs for years, was jailed after he failed to adhere to the terms of his suspended sentence for drug possession.
Upon leaving Wormwood Scrubs Prison in West London early Tuesday, Doherty told reporters he was happy to be free.
He also said he was eager to enjoy a rum and Coke and spend time with his cats, The Times of London reported.
The troubled recording artist then borrowed a journalist's cell phone to call for a ride, the newspaper said.
Davis discusses decision not to drink
LONDON, May 6 (UPI) -- U.S. actress Kristin Davis revealed in a recent interview that she considers herself an alcoholic, but has abstained from drinking for years.
Davis, who will be seen in the "Sex and the City" movie later this month, made the remarks about drinking in an interview with the British edition of Shape magazine.
"I was really shy and I didn't know how to come out of my shell," Davis said. "(I drank) for the same reason I loved acting -- I wanted to feel things and express myself and be free. And I'm not naturally that way."
As far as her body image goes, Davis admitted, "I'm a curvy girl."
"I'm never going to be the thinnest person in Hollywood, but the truth is, I don't want to be," she said. "I went through phases when I said, 'I can't have this or I can't have that.' But now I don't deprive myself."
She told Shape the key is eating what you want, but in moderation.
"I never let myself get too hungry. I make sure I eat every three hours or so, mostly protein, good carbs, veggies and salads," she said.
Stars line up for Mandela birthday concert
LONDON, May 6 (UPI) -- Queen, Leona Lewis and Annie Lennox have signed on to perform at Nelson Mandela's upcoming 90th birthday concert in London, organizers said.
The June 27 event honoring the former South African president will also feature performances by the Soweto Gospel Choir, Shirley Bassey, Razorlight, Simple Minds, Sugababes, Andrea and Sharon Corr, Eddy Grant, Italian star Zucchero and the Spanish group Amaral, the BBC said.
Several surprise guests are expected to appear as well.
Proceeds from the star-studded concert in Hyde Park are to go to Mandela's AIDS charity, the report said.
"You all know that I am supposed to be retired. But my friends and the charitable organizations that bear my name want to use my 90th birthday year to raise funds to continue our work and so, of course, I want to help them," Mandela said when the concert was announced. "So, we have a bargain -- I am going to London and they will host a concert in Hyde Park, which will raise awareness of our continuing work and much needed funds."
The BBC said the concert is to take place 20 years after one at Wembley Stadium marked his 70th birthday and called for his release from prison.
