'Hee Haw' star Hager dead of heart attack

NASHVILLE, May 4 (UPI) -- Jim Hager, known for his performances on the variety TV series "Hee Haw," has died of an apparent heart attack in Nashville at the age of 66.

Paired with his twin brother Jon, Hager was a fan favorite on the CBS country and western series throughout the 1970s and 80s, before the Hager brothers left "Hee Haw" in 1988, The (Nashville) Tennessean reported Sunday.

Family friend Adam Dread said the twins' on-screen antics were identical to the vivid personalities both expressed in real life.

"Jim, really both of them were just always fooling around, always laughing, always saying something to make you laugh," Dread said. "Jim was so funny but also so sincere."

A spokesman for the Vanderbilt University Medical Center told The Tennessean Hager collapsed in a Tennessee parking lot last Thursday after suffering an apparent heart attack and died shortly after.

He is survived by his brother.
