NEW YORK, April 19 (UPI) -- Chris Carter, the mind behind "The X-Files," has hinted there may soon be a third Hollywood movie installment based on the popular TV series.
Shortly before Carter appeared at the Comic Con convention in New York Friday, the "X-Files" creator said this summer's sequel to the original 1998 "X-Files" movie could ultimately be part of a trilogy, EW.com reported.
"We would like to make another film," Carter told the Web site. "We're not under the illusion that it's a given; we've got to perform with (this summer's 'X-Files: I Want to Believe') in order to give it another day."
"Believe" is due out in U.S. theaters July 25 and while it will feature famed "X-Files" characters FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, it reportedly will serve as a stand-alone film.
Carter told EW.com the third film would likely revisit the series' plot of an alien invasion taking place in December 2012.
"Well, we didn't think that one up," Carter said of the specific invasion date. "That is actually part of the literature. It is a Mayan date. But I think we'd like to revisit that whole storyline."
