Variety.com said Portman will soon play the lead in the new retelling of Emily Bronte's gothic romance "Wuthering Heights."

The adaptation was written by Olivia Hetreed, who previously penned the film version of the novel "Girl With a Pearl Earring."

Laurence Olivier and Merle Oberon played doomed, early 19th century British lovers Cathy and Heathcliff in the 1939 film version of "Wuthering Heights," while Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche put their own spin on the roles in 1992.
