SAN FRANCISCO, April 5 (UPI) -- Thanks to its iTunes digital download store, Apple Inc. has surpassed Wal-Mart as the largest U.S. music seller, market research revealed.

The Los Angeles Times said Apple sold more albums in January and February than any other U.S. retailer, data compiled by the research firm NPD Group showed.

Although people still buy more CDs than download the albums, Apple is outselling any individual CD seller, the Times said.

"It's a major milestone," Tom Adams, president of the consulting firm Adams Media Research, told the newspaper. "It is the first instance of an electronic venue surpassing (an actual physical) retail venue for any kind of media delivery."
