Wells: I wasn't charged with DUI

LOS ANGELES, March 17 (UPI) -- Dawn Wells, the U.S. actress who starred on "Gilligan's Island," says she wasn't charged with driving under the influence when she was arrested last year.

Wells, 69, who portrayed good-girl Mary Ann on the beloved TV sit-com, was arrested in Idaho last October after police pulled her over for swerving and found marijuana in her car.

"I need to put the kibosh on rumors," Wells told "Entertainment Tonight."

"It was my birthday and I was coming from a dinner. The marijuana found in the car was not mine. The marijuana charge was dismissed and the person whom it belonged to went to jail. There was no DUI charge. I want to make it clear that I was charged with a traffic offense."

The actress told "Entertainment Tonight" there is no truth to the story the pot belonged to hitchhikers she had picked up.

Also inaccurate, she said, are reports that stated she failed a field sobriety test. Wells insisted the test was administered improperly by an inexperienced officer.

She recently pleaded guilty to reckless driving in the incident.

"I was trying to turn on the heater and was in an unfamiliar car," she explained.
