"I can't think of a greater honor than this," the Seattle Times quoted Jones as saying at the Paramount Theatre event, which was planned to coincide with the opening of the Northwest African American Museum.

Jones, whose birthday was Friday, was also honored with the museum's first Lifetime Achievement Award.

Talking to reporters before the concert, Jones recalled performing in Seattle with Ray Charles decades ago. He also noted that back then he couldn't anticipate a museum would be created to recognize the contributions of the area's famous African-Americans, the Times said.

"Ray and I used to say, 'Not one drop of my self-worth depends on your acceptance of me,'" Jones said.

On tap for the concert were Carlos Santana, James Ingram, Ernestine Anderson, Siedah Garrett, Clarence Acox & the Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra featuring jazz great Buddy Catlett, Steve Connell and Sekou, Laura "Piece" Kelley-Jahn, Ruby Bishop, and Juan Huey Ray and Sound of the Northwest.
