BEIJING, March 11 (UPI) -- A Chinese television station says it will produce its own version of the U.S. comedy series "Ugly Betty."

"Ugly Betty," which stars America Ferrera in the title role, was inspired by the Colombian telenovela "Yo Soy Betty, La Fea."

"Invincible Ugly Woman" is to air on China's Hunan Satellite TV, the BBC reported Tuesday. The Chinese station said it plans to produce 400 episodes of the show for five seasons and expects to start shooting next month.

An unknown actress has been cast in the lead role.

"Ugly Betty" is about a bright, but homely and awkward young woman who tries to fit in at the fashion magazine where she works.

Ferrera's performance in the show has earned her numerous awards.
