NEW YORK, Feb. 29 (UPI) -- U.S. rapper-turned-actor Andre Benjamin said he talked to basketball great Julius "Dr. J" Erving to prepare for his role in the basketball film "Semi-Pro."

Benjamin plays a member of a fictional American Basketball Association team in the 1970s-set big-screen comedy.

"I had a conversation, a quick phone call and (Dr. J.) pretty much explained what it was like to be an African-American playing at that time, explaining what the 'fro was about," Benjamin said in New York this week. "Even though a lot of people thought it was a great style ... it was also about rebellion and freedom at the time. He was telling me there was still a lot of racism (and about) a lot of the moves. ... They were really just going for it."

Asked why he thinks so many hip-hop artists are being cast in films lately, Benjamin said, "It has a lot to do with getting people into theaters and studios see the power ... you could have just one single that's a hit and they want to put you in a movie and I think it is the responsibility of the artist to take it seriously and make the best out of a situation."
