Sharif ordered to pay valet $318,190

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 21 (UPI) -- A Santa Monica Superior Court judge has ordered Egyptian-born movie star Omar Sharif to pay $318,190 to a parking valet he punched in 2005.

Sharif, 75, starred in the classic films "Lawrence of Arabia" and "Dr. Zhivago."

The actor was accused of insulting and punching Juan Anderson in the face outside a Beverly Hills restaurant where Sharif and a companion had just finished a $500 meal, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Anderson, 50, said Sharif became furious when he wouldn't accept a 20-euro note as payment for bringing his car around. Anderson, who is from Guatemala, said Sharif called him a "stupid Mexican" and slugged him in the face.

The actor later pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor battery charge, and was ordered to pay a $100 fine and attend anger-management classes, the Times said.

However, Anderson sued Sharif for assault and battery, emotional distress and commission of a hate crime.

Santa Monica Superior Court Judge Joe W. Hilberman awarded Anderson $318,190 in damages Tuesday in that case.
