LOS ANGELES, Feb. 20 (UPI) -- U.S. actor Kelsey Grammer, who played Ebenezer Scrooge in a TV movie version of "A Christmas Carol," is set to reprise the role in a spoof of the classic.

Variety.com said Grammer has signed on to play a modern-day incarnation of the iconic miser in the big-screen satire "An American Carol," which is to be helmed by "Scary Movie 4" director David Zucker.

The project is slated to begin shooting next week in Los Angeles, the trade paper said.

The actor previously played Scrooge in the 2004 NBC-Hallmark production of "A Christmas Carol."

Grammer, who is best known for playing psychiatrist Frasier Crane on TV's "Cheers" and "Frasier," now stars in the sit-com "Back to You."
