'Tudors,' 'Garage' win big at IFTAs

DUBLIN, Ireland, Feb. 19 (UPI) -- The sexy, historical TV drama "The Tudors" has earned seven prizes at the Irish Film and Television Awards gala in Dublin.

"The Tudors," which is based on the life of King Henry VIII, won the Best Drama Series/Soap award Sunday, while its stars Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Maria Doyle Kennedy and Nick Dunning were all honored for their performances.

The show's costume designer, production designer, and hair and makeup team also took home awards for their work.

The movie "Garage" picked up the prizes for Best Film, Best Director of a film for Lenny Abrahamson, Best Script for a film for Mark O'Halloran and the IFTA for Actor in a Lead Role in a film for Pat Shortt.

The Irish-language film "Kings" garnered awards for Original Score, Sound, Editing and Actor in a Supporting Role in a film for Brendan Conroy.

"Atonement" actress Saoirse Ronan walked away with the Supporting Actress in a film prize, as well as the Irish Film Board Rising Star award.

Hilary Swank and Daniel Day-Lewis were named Best International Actress and Actor, respectively, and filmmaker and actor Mel Gibson received a standing ovation when he won the Outstanding Contribution to World Cinema Award.
