LOS ANGELES, Feb. 12 (UPI) -- British actor Chris Eccleston has signed on to play the villain in the upcoming big-screen action flick "G.I. Joe."

Eccleston has previously starred in the sci-fi TV shows "Doctor Who" and "Heroes" and the horror flick "28 Days Later."

The Hollywood Reporter said Irish-born actor David Murray had been cast in the part of Destro but was forced to drop out because of problems with his visa, so Eccleston took his place.

"G.I. Joe" will be directed by "The Mummy" and "Van Helsing" director Stephen Sommers, the trade paper said.

Channing Tatum, Dennis Quaid, Marlon Wayans, Sienna Miller, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje and Joseph Gordon-Levitt were all previously cast in the film.
