LOS ANGELES, Feb. 10 (UPI) -- The Los Angeles County Museum of Art officially reopened its doors this weekend in lavish style, ending years of virtual anonymity.

The Los Angeles Times said Sunday that on hand for the refurbished museum's grand opening were more than 1,100 top officials from the worlds of entertainment, art and business.

Former TV journalist Maria Shriver, who was at Saturday's gala event along with her husband, California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, said the revamped site could now be seen as one of world's best museums.

"When you have a museum like this it becomes a destination museum," the former NBC News reporter said.

Actress Rita Wilson, whose movie credits include "Now and Then" and "Sleepless in Seattle," echoed the opinions of California's first lady.

"I think anything like this is great for Los Angeles. LA has amazing museums, but it's not what you come here to see," said Wilson, who is married to actor Tom Hanks. "People go to Disneyland."

The Times said the event not only managed to wow its celebrity critics, but also raised more than $5 million.
