Fire disrupts school's 'Peter Pan' show

ELGIN, Ill., Feb. 10 (UPI) -- A weekend dance performance of "Peter Pan" at a high school in Illinois came to an abrupt end when a fire started on stage, it was reported Sunday.

The Chicago Tribune reported one performer suffered non-life-threatening injuries Saturday when flames broke out in the auditorium at Larkin High School in Elgin, Ill.

Witness David Tonge, whose daughter teaches dance at the school, said the audience was made aware of the fire during one of the performance's key scenes.

"We were just about to clap to bring Tinker Bell back to life when the lights came on and we had to evacuate," Tonge said. "Most of us could smell something, but we thought it was left over from a smoke machine used in a scene a little earlier."

The nearly 300 audience members were quickly evacuated and firefighters were contained the blaze to the stage.

The Tribune said the cause had yet to be determined, but an investigation was underway.
