'Atonement' wins best film BAFTA

LONDON, Feb. 10 (UPI) -- The romantic period drama "Atonement" was named best film at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards ceremony in London Sunday.

The film, starring Keira Knightley and James McAvoy, also picked up the prize for production design. It had been nominated for 14 awards.

"This Is England" won the British Film honor.

"No Country for Old Men" earned the directing BAFTA for brothers Joel and Ethan Coen, as well as the supporting actor statuette for Javier Bardem and the cinematography prize for Roger Deakins.

British actor Daniel Day-Lewis earned best actor honor for "There Will Be Blood," Marion Cotillard scooped up the leading actress prize for "La Vie en Rose" and Tilda Swinton won the supporting actress award for "Michael Clayton."

"Juno" scribe Diablo Cody won the BAFTA for best original screenplay and "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly" writer Ronald Harwood won for adapted screenplay.
