'Hairspray' up for 11 Olivier awards

LONDON, Feb. 7 (UPI) -- The London production of the U.S. musical "Hairspray" has earned 11 Laurence Olivier Award nominations.

Variety.com said the show garnered nods in every category in which it was eligible, including best musical.

Also competing for the top musical award are "The Drowsy Chaperone," "The Lord of the Rings" and "Parade," which is up for seven Olivier prizes.

"War Horse" galloped to the lead in drama categories, with six nominations including best play.

Also shortlisted in the category are "A Disappearing Number," "The Reporter" and "Vernon God Little."

Nominated for best comedy are "The Crimson Hotel," "Elling," "Rafta, Rafta" and "Whipping It Up."

"Boeing-Boeing," "Dealer's Choice," "Macbeth," "Saint Joan" and "The Seagull" are all in the running for best revival of a play, while "Fiddler on the Roof," "Little Shop of Horrors" and "The Magic Flute -- Impempe Yomlingo" have all been nominated for best revival of a musical.

"The Lord of the Rings," "The Drowsy Chaperone" and "Macbeth" all grabbed five nods.

The Olivier awards will be handed out March 9 at Grosvenor House Hotel in London.
