Pakistan considers lifting Indian film ban

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, Jan. 29 (UPI) -- Pakistan is considering lifting a 40-year-old ban on the import and public screening of Indian films.

The Senate Standing Committee on Sports, Culture & Youth Affairs last week recommended the long-standing cinematic prohibition be rescinded and suggested Indian films be imported, as long as India agrees to allow in movies from Pakistan, as well, the Press Trust of India said.

"We have devised a mechanism for allowing the import of Indian films for a period of one year, after which the arrangements can be reviewed," Sen. Zafar Iqbal Chaudhry, chairman of the committee, told PTI, without offering details about the plan.

Before Indian films can be imported, the government must approve the proposal, however, Chaudhry said. A decision was expected shortly, PTI reported.
