ATHENS, Ga., Jan. 23 (UPI) -- After an arduous tour to promote its last album, Georgia rockers Drive-By Trucks had an "extremely easy" time making their latest album.

Group leader Patterson Hood says the new "Brighter Than Creations Dark" benefited from a break from the road, during which he co-produced soul singer Bettye Lavette's Grammy-nominated album "The Scene of the Crime." That also gave him, Hood, guitarist Mike Cooley and bassist Shonna Tucker time to come up with new songs for the band.

"A lot of the songs on the record, we'd work 'em up and record them in one or two takes," Hood says. "We went in and didn't have an agenda or a concept or a title -- just a bunch of songs. In some ways it's the most eclectic bunch of songs we've ever recorded, but it's still a very cohesive record.

"This record's got sort of a dark, spooky mood about it, but we were having a really good time."

The 19-track "Brighter Than Creation's Dark" is the group's eighth album and its follow-up to 2006's "A Blessing and a Curse." Drive-By Truckers begin touring to support the album on Feb. 11 in Anaheim, Calif.
