LOS ANGELES, Jan. 21 (UPI) -- John Travolta has gone to the defense of Hollywood star and fellow Scientologist Tom Cruise whose religious views have been widely criticized.

A video Cruise's representative said was made in 2004 for a Church of Scientology event has been making headlines since it surfaced on the Internet last week.

The video shows Cruise passionately discussing his beliefs and declaring Scientologists have "the ability to create new and better realities."

But Travolta said he thinks the media is making too much out of the whole thing.

"(Tom) has -- we all have -- the right to practice how we feel," Travolta told People.com.

"It finally becomes unfair."
