SAN DIEGO, Jan. 20 (UPI) -- Musician John Stewart, best known for his work with the Kingston Trio, died Saturday of an apparent massive stroke in San Diego at the age of 68.

The Kingston Trio Web site reported the folk singer suffered a massive stroke or a brain aneurysm Friday and doctors were unable to repair the damage.

During his career, Stewart recorded more than 45 solo albums and worked with the Kingston Trio for another seven years.

Among the band's most popular tunes were "Scotch and Soda" and their version of the folk hit "Tom Dooley."

The Web site said Stewart had completed work recently on a new solo album, which has not been titled or given a release date.

Stewart is survived by his wife Buffy, a daughter and three sons.
