LOS ANGELES, Jan. 16 (UPI) -- "High School Musical" and "Hairspray" heartthrob, actor Zac Efron, underwent an appendectomy at a Los Angeles hospital, his representative told People.com.

Efron, 25, had the surgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center on Tuesday.

"Zac had his appendix removed and is recuperating," his rep confirmed to People.com.

Efron recently signed on to star in a third installment of the "High School Musical" franchise.

Although the first two musical flicks were wildly popular TV movies that aired on the Disney Channel, the third film is slated for a theatrical release.
