LOS ANGELES, Jan. 15 (UPI) -- Jaden Smith, the 9-year-old son of Hollywood stars Will and Jada Pinkett Smith, has signed on for a role in the sci-fi remake, "The Day the Earth Stood Still."

Jaden Smith will play the step-son of a scientist, played by Jennifer Connelly, who first makes contact with the alien Klaatu, played by Keanu Reeves, The Hollywood Reporter said.

"The Exorcism of Emily Rose" director Scott Derrickson is shooting the re-do of the 1951 film classic in Vancouver, the trade paper said.

Smith earned Teen Choice and MTV Movie awards for his work in "The Pursuit of Happyness," in which he co-starred with his dad.
