'Compass' passes $300M mark at box office

NEW YORK, Jan. 15 (UPI) -- "The Golden Compass," starring Australian actress Nicole Kidman and British actor Daniel Craig, has passed the $300 million mark at the worldwide box office.

It now has a cumulative gross of more than $315 million, earning at least $67 million in the United States since its Dec. 7 opening, New Line Cinema announced Tuesday.

Based on Philip Pullman's best-selling fantasy novel, "The Golden Compass" is set to open in Japan, its last major territory, March 1.

"'The Golden Compass' has immense global appeal," Rolf Mittweg, New Line's president and CEO of worldwide distribution and marketing, said in a statement. "The box office revenue has been nothing less than astonishing overseas. With the forthcoming premiere in Japan, we can expect a significant boost to our worldwide box office."
