LOS ANGELES, Jan. 12 (UPI) -- U.S. actress Courtney Thorne-Smith, who has appeared on the small screen in "According to Jim" and "Ally McBeal," has given birth to a boy.

A representative for the 40-year-old actress said the "Melrose Place" star and her husband, media executive Roger Fishman, were elated following Friday's birth, People magazine reported.

"Mother and dad are thrilled," the unidentified representative said of the birth of Jacob Emerson Fishman. "They say the baby is absolutely gorgeous."

The birth of the couple's first child comes little more than a year after they were married, having officially tied the knot on New Year's Day 2007.
